Concentrate on the essentials

I am drawing since many years, mostly butterflies, moths and birds. Good drawings and watercolours can pronouce the essential characters of organisms. Even in the age of digital photography, hand-illustrated guides for birds are still the standard, and good illustrations can still outmatch photographs.

My illustrations start as pencil drawings on watercolour paper, and colouration is performed with watercolours and high-quality brushes. Watercolouring is carried out in several steps; first rather pale and watery, towards more intense colours and a drier and detailed style. Brighter parts are just left out whereas darker parts will be worked over several times until the image reflects the colour dynamics of the object.
