I have made drawings for many years, mostly of butterflies, moths and birds. Good drawings and watercolours can accentuate the essential characteristics of organisms. Even in the age of digital photography, hand-illustrated guides for birds are therefore still standard, and good illustrations can still outmatch photographs.
My illustrations start as pencil drawings on water colour paper, and colouration is then performed with watercolours and high-quality brushes. Watercolouring is carried out in several steps; first pale and watery, then shifting towards more intense colours and a drier and more detailed style. Brighter parts are left out, whereas darker parts will be worked over several times until the image reflects the colour dynamics of the object.
